Community Meeting
By the way, there's a community meeting attended by members of the JC police department on May 9, 2007. It's in the public school located at the corner of Franklin and Sherman Avenues. I believe it's at 7:30 pm, but will double-check.
Maybe I expect too much
I've never done this before and to be honest, I don't really know why I'm doing it now. Well, actually, that's a lie. I do know. I'm doing this because every single blog I read is either about Downtown Jersey City (of course) or Hoboken. And the fact remains, there's this 'hood up on the cliffs over Hoboken called Jersey City Heights. And despite the fact that we're sorely lacking in anything closely resembling a hip (I hate the fact that I just used that word, but whatever) eating spot or even a decent place to grab a cup of coffee, we do have some spectacular views of the city, some ridiculous lofts, georgous Victorians and pretty cool neighbors.
So, I guess to make this first entry come full circle, I suppose I'm doing this because I'm convinced if I can get just a few of the Heights newcomers (I myself am still one, even after four years) to get together, we just might be able to get someone to STOP opening crap stores on Palisade Avenue and start developing businesses we would actually like to patronize! This might sound a little crazy, but maybe, just maybe, instead of opening a barber shop that really serves no purpose in the community since there are five others within 15 feet, why not try changing the zoning ordnances so someone could run a small cafe? a gourmet grocery? a swanky little pet store? anything besides what's there now!!
Oh--and before anyone gets all righteous on me, I'm not saying we should try and get rid of current businesses. It would just be nice to see some positive development occuring in the area. That way you kind of feel like staying put, instead of always wondering whether you should sell and keep it moving (despite the fact that you're convinced you've found one of the last gems left anywhere near the city).
Anyway, that's it. I don't want to get too far ahead of myself. Maybe I'm expecting too much. But you'd think, in an area where condos are selling for $800K, there'd be a decent place to hang on the weekend...somewhere we can walk to. Is that really asking a lot?
